Hey, what sort of fake meat would you like to see me juice?
Super Juice Me
I don't believe in "cleanses." I think our digestive systems operate more or less as they were meant to, and that any efforts to impede that natural operation are likely to do more harm than good. But I guess we'll find out. Thirty days of juice, starting March 20: recipes, photos, budgets, trials and tribulations with Susie Cagle.

Day twenty seven.
I pulled an all-nighter to finish this comic book for Stumptown. Drank about 8 ounces of coffee with soy milk and a lot of water. Ugh. Headachy and sore and really craving some comfort food. Breakfast carbs.
Breakfast drink: two bananas, six strawberries, 1/3 cup of frozen blueberries, orange juice and soy milk. I’ve been adding more OJ and soy milk instead of ice — a little more filling and delicious. I think I’m definitely going to keep making these when I am back to chew-food.
Snacks: an apple and Maggie Mudd toasted coconut vegan ice cream in a cone. Yeah that’s right. I know that in my former, non-juicing life I would’ve inhaled this, but it was actually really difficult to eat, and really filling. I feel like I earned it after last night. And also because this is a completely arbitrary and self-imposed experiment. But I digress.
Evening drink: eight ounces of apple-carrot-broccoli juice before I passed out. -

Day twenty-six.
Andrea agreed with Melanie that I look waxy. And not skinny. Thanks a lot guys.
Breakfast drink: banana and a half, eight strawberries, OJ and soy milk.
Snacks: the last of the pecans. Boo.
Evening drink: two and a half red delicious and one gala apple, seven carrots, and a bunch of broccoli. I think this one is my jam, but I love broccoli in everything.
And then, it was a long night. (cont.) -

Day twenty five.
Felt fine today. Worked okay throughout the day, still sleeping consistently 7-8 hours a night and waking up relatively easily in the morning. Knees are definitely feeling better, but this could be entirely coincidental. I want chocolate.
Breakfast drink: big banana, 1/2 cup of frozen blueberries, some green leftover juice and orange juice. Not bad! Definitely something different, but I feel like the flavor just wasn’t all there for some reason.
Snacks: some pecans and two slices of Tofurkey.
Evening drink: leftovers over ice. Eh. It’s better with bananas and blueberries. -

Day twenty-four.
One thing I haven’t covered so much here is the social stigma of this project. If people know I’m doing this, when they see me they expect me to be emaciated and faint. If they don’t know, they expect me to be able to act like a normal person. But you’re all wrong!!
Tonight I went to an event for my pals at Microcosm Publishing (plug who are putting out Nine Gallons #1-4 starting this summer buy my books please plug) and there was a nice spread of fresh eats from Josh Plueg’s new vegan cookbook “In Search of the Lost Taste.” Normally I would’ve dug right in, not just because I was starving and the food looked great, but because it seemed kind of rude not to, what with Josh sitting right there and all. I did end up eating a bite of each thing, all of which were spicy and delicious and satisfying, even for such miniscule quantities. Man. Food. Wow.
Breakfast drink: two small bananas, strawberries, the same. Of course.
Snacks: four ounces coffee, and three bites of grapefruit, cilantro and tofu, and a few pecans. The one bite of baked tofu really hit the spot too… I can’t wait to pick up a little brick of that stuff at Trader Joe’s. But oh how I am getting ahead of myself.
Evening drink: four clearance apples, seven carrots, the rest of the spinach and parsley from Friday, plus a little broccoli. Not great — I think it’s best to stick to fewer but a higher quantity of green veg in these things as opposed to mixing them. Certainly drinkable, though.

Day twenty-three.
I felt god-fucking-awful when I first got up this morning, like I was hungover — but how could I be? I had three sips of that noxious poison. Jesus, juicing, what have you done to my defenses? Maybe I just need to be drinking more water…
I think more than anything things are just getting fucking tedious. I’ve been eating more or less the same thing every day for the past three weeks — I can’t think of other conditions of my own choosing where I’d be doing that. Absurd. I want to chew goddamnit.
Breakfast drink: one and a half bananas, strawberries, yeah.Snacks: another handful of pecans.
Evening drink: more leftovers, over ice. MAKE IT END.

I think next I’m going to do 30 days of roids.

Day twenty-two.
I kind of fell off the wagon today. I’ve been super stressed out trying to finish this comic within the next week, so I was snacking a little throughout the day. Then Andrea came home around 11 and suggested we go out to a bar.
We went down to the Trappist in Oakland, where Andrea’s friend works, so we ended up getting two free beers even though I didn’t really want one. IPAs are my favorite and this one smelled and tasted like acetone, an experience I can’t remember having with a beer with a reasonable alcohol content. I drank maybe two ounces and did not feel good.
Breakfast drink: one and a half bananas, strawberries, delicious even though I can’t stand it for some reason anymore. Just the boredom I think. I’ll have to figure out a way to switch this up a bit. Suggestions?
Snacks: half a cup of pecans, a few sips of that awful beer.
Evening drink: leftovers. I like making the savory juices in 2-3 day batches but they are significantly more delicious when fresh.
